Ppl told me parenthood would take my breath away but I did not expect that it would also take my words away. I have been trying for months to articulate the sensation of becoming a mom but itโ€™s been too huge to distill. Last month my dad and brother climbed Mt Kilimanjaro and I loved the way my brother explained the process to me, refusing to sensationalize any part of it. โ€œJust a bunch of steps,โ€ he said. What an approach! itโ€™s the ultimate metaphor for motherhood (and life). When you look at the top of a mountain from the bottom, you wonder how the hell youโ€™re going to get up there. If it is even possible. Often you convince yourself that itโ€™s not and just keep distracting yourself at the bottom but if you just do what you know how to do, put one foot ahead of the other, keep taking steps, just walking, you get there. Sometimes it will thrill you or exhaust you, challenge or scare the hell out of you; often it will be tedious, redundant โ€” how many more of these forsaken steps! โ€” it will force you to confront the grisliest parts of yourself, to correct and keep climbing. During especially spirited sparks, it will crack your heart open, then knock you back down and just when youโ€™ve convinced yourself that you were right when you were at the bottom โ€” itโ€™s impossible to get to the top, youโ€™ll lift your head and realize that your kids are 1, youโ€™re out of a bad relationship, in a new job. Wtvr. You reached the top of the mountain! And youโ€™re not just still alive, but a whole lot fuller. As Scott Galloway says, life is rich. Happy birthday sweet daughters of mine
